Confidentiality and ethics
Confidentiality
Whatever is discussed in a counselling session is confidential to the client and the counsellor.
There are two exceptions to this:
-
all counsellors have their own supervisor with whom they discuss their professional work (clients’ names remain anonymous)
-
if a counsellor has good reason to believe that someone is at risk of harming themselves or others, appropriate authorities must be informed, with the understanding that the client is involved in this process

Professional ethics
All counsellors working with Cherwell Counselling are members of a national professional body such as BACP (British Association of Psychotherapy and Counselling), and subscribe to the ethical framework they provide. Cherwell Counselling require all its counsellors to carry professional indemnity insurance.
Data Protection
Each client’s contact address, phone number and email are kept securely and updated whenever we are notified of an amendment.

No third party is allowed access to these details.
Counsellors keep private hand-written notes on work with individual counselling clients, to assist memory in working with them. These notes are kept securely for no more than 7 years.
